31 KILO was a German-Turkish exhibition and cooperation project between "the Space Istanbul" and "Künstlerhaus Dortmund." Four Turkish artists met four German artists to work together and realize two exhibitions in both cities.

In Istanbul, I visited the four Turkish artists in their homes and studios. During these visits, I photographed them in their private spaces and spoke with them about their origins, their moves, and the changes they observed in Istanbul. At the end of each visit, I asked them to give me a personal object for the project. These collected objects and photographs were arranged into three different "islands" for the exhibition.

The central question was how private worlds can be transformed into public art, and what happens when personal objects and spaces become part of an exhibition.

For the Dortmund exhibition, two additional photographs were created that take up this idea but approach it differently. Instead of making arranged portraits, I documented spontaneous situations in which young people themselves decide how they want to present themselves.

Both images show different forms of representation: on the one hand, digital community; on the other, urban self-expression. They complement the work from Istanbul by raising the question of how people make themselves visible beyond arranged situations—between private moments and public marking.
The project is funded by KUNSTSTIFTUNG NRW and supported with an ECF Step Beyond Travel Grant. Further information: 31kilo.blogspot.de
